Hospitality Jobs For Students

The hospitality industry is quite broad. It includes jobs in hotels, restaurants, casinos, theme parks, cruise lines, and other facilities that help customers meet their leisure and recreational needs.

Being a broad industry, you have limitless opportunities to bag your desired role. Here are some of the jobs you can apply for as a hospitality student:

Concierge

As a concierge, you will interact directly with customers, providing them with various services. At some hotels, this is an entry-level job. However, some luxury hotels require concierges to have years of hospitality experience. A concierge needs to be a problem solver with impressive customer-service skills. To do well in this job, you need to be a person who enjoys serving others. In addition, you must have an attitude of graciousness, kindness, and willingness to go above and beyond your expected duties. Because the job is often taking care of many people and many needs at once, you need to be very organized and able to use technology to help them.

Front Desk Agent

As a Front Desk Agent, you will be the first point of contact for the hospitality company. You, therefore, need to have a pleasant personality because guests’ encounters with you will define how they rate your company. It is safe to say that as a front desk

attendant, you will deliver a wide range of duties. You will allow access to other employees, answer phones, transfer calls, schedule appointments, answer questions, give directions and manage the flow of traffic in the office.

Housekeeper

Housekeepers are responsible for maintaining a standard of cleanliness throughout a hotel or other hospitality venue. There are many other jobs related to maintenance and cleaning in the hospitality industry. There are also opportunities for management positions within these areas. As a housekeeper, you will perform light cleaning for hotels, households, and businesses. You can either work with an agency, as a part-time employee, or as a self-employed housekeeper.

Porter

Porters are tasked with handling baggage for guests. It is one of many support staff positions in the hospitality industry. Another common position is that of valet (also known as parking lot attendant).

Waiter/Waitress

Waiters and waitresses work in restaurants, bars, hotels, casinos, and other food-serving establishments. They interact directly with customers by taking orders, serving food and beverages, and taking payments from patrons. The waiting job is unique in that you have the most amount of contact with customers, are largely responsible for setting the mood of the customer’s experience, and depend on tips for a large amount of your income. Waiting tables can be a summer job or a lifelong career, all depending on personal ambitions and opportunities. No matter what career path you are looking into, it is likely that there are some skills required of a waiter or waitress that would be transferable: from time and stress management to people skills, to basic accounting, servers do a lot that is important in other lines of work.

As a student, you can enjoy a lot of benefits from working while studying. The truth is, it indeed can get overwhelming. It will take extra effort to hold down the job and have excellent grades, but it is possible, and many students are doing it. Before you choose to work and take up that job to build your career, you need to evaluate yourself. You must figure out whether you can handle both responsibilities. It is not only about making money, although, for most students it is, but also about making sure that you build your career and make your life better.
