Our properties are home to an abundance of wildlife, such as local bison, wild horses, golden eagles, black bears, prairie dogs, desert bighorn sheep, and one of the largest bat populations in North America.

Living at Vermejo

The closest town to Vermejo is Raton, New Mexico. Raton is about 40 miles from the Vermejo headquarters, making this one of the most remote destinations and the largest private nature reserve in the United States. Because of its remoteness, most employees who work at Vermejo live on the reserve.

Vermejo provides housing and meals at no cost to our seasonal employees. Housing is dormitory style, and most staff have a private room and bathroom with a shared common space with washers and dryers. Seasonal housing is equipped with WIFI internet and basic furniture, including a bed, dresser, nightstand, and lamp. These seasonal staff rooms do not have kitchens. Three meals a day are served from our employee dining room in the main lodge building. AT&T phone service is the only cellular service available on the ranch.
