The very first developers of Manhattan Beach dreamt of a unique resort community built atop coastal sand dunes. While picturesque, these massive dunes created a major challenge for the original township, as westerly winds caused a constant drift of sugary sand across streets, railroads and boardwalks. In a monumental effort that would forever change Manhattan Beach, most of these dunes were leveled in order to build the town and the sand was purchased and shipped to the beaches of Waikiki.
