The U.S. hospitality industry employs millions of people—15,376,000 as of January 2016, in fact. And according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it added 458,000 of those positions in the previous year alone. If you’re looking for a career with job security—even in the midst of a worldwide economic crisis—it will be hard to do better than hospitality. Hospitality is all about people, whether you’re a spa scheduling coordinator, bellman, summer camp counselor, bartender, or working in any other position within the industry. And at its core, your job’s main purpose is to make people happy. If solving problems, soothing tensions, lifting moods, and facilitating experiences all to put a smile on another’s face are challenges you enjoy, you are meant to work in hospitality.

Hospitality jobs exist in every country of the world. And whether you’re a sous chef, room attendant, night auditor, or host/hostess,  your skills should transfer to any locale. From cruise ship jobs to hotels, restaurants, and resorts in other lands, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to feed your travel bug, explore different cultures, and meet new people when you work in the hospitality industry.

3. You’re creative

No matter what your hospitality job might be—from chef de cuisine to front desk agent—you’re helping to create the guest experience. And because that experience is a major factor in the organization’s success, most employers are very open to creative suggestions to enhance and improve upon it. If you’re always coming up with ways to do things faster, better or in a more enjoyable way, you are meant to work in hospitality.

4. You crave variety

Does getting up at the same time every morning and going to an office to complete the same repetitive tasks for eight hours a day, five days a week, with the same people sound like your worst nightmare? If so, a hospitality job will be your dream come true. No matter your position, no two days are identical within this exciting, dynamic industry.

A dishwasher becomes a head chef. A bellman becomes a hotel manager. A groundskeeper becomes a country club vice president. These are not fairy tales or the plot lines of far-fetched Hollywood movies but actual career paths you’ll find in the hospitality industry.
