Summary

Under the supervision of the Golf Course Superintendents, the 2nd Assistant Superintendent supervises and participates in golf course maintenance on a daily basis. The 2nd Assistant aids in administering employee training and keeping training records, keeping daily log reports and filling the role of other managers when needed. The most important duty of the 2nd Assistant is to be a direct communication link between the Grounds Crew and the Golf Course Superintendents.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Supervises and participates in all daily maintenance activities
  • Arrives at work half an hour before the crew’s start-time for daily equipment setup (check fuel in all equipment, notify mechanics of any equipment failures, and set-up all equipment for efficient employee morning start)
  • Occasionally leads morning crew meetings, highlighting responsibilities and expectations, along with any other pertinent employee information
  • Performs procedural, safety, and equipment training for Juniper Preserve staff
  • Applies and keeps record of all chemicals on the golf course
  • Daily repair and maintenance of irrigation systems
  • Assists in daily course set-up and hand watering
  • Organizes and inventories irrigation- and chemical-storage areas
  • Maintains working knowledge of pump station maintenance requirements
  • Scouts golf courses for potential problems and reports to Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents
  • Assists in winterization/pressurization of irrigation systems, including all water lines, valves and pump stations
  • Assists Head Mechanic/Assistant Mechanic with equipment repair and maintenance
  • Assists with snow removal and plowing
  • Participates in recruiting, training, planning, assigning, directing work, evaluating performance, rewarding, disciplining associates, including interns; addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Minimizes overtime pay by relieving hourly employees and finishing their task as needed
  • Communicates with the Golf Shop regarding tee times and any special cultural practices
  • Maintains proper radio etiquette and return radios to chargers when finished
  • Reads, understands and keeps current up-to-date material safety data sheets “SDS”
  • Effectively handles multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Incorporates safe work practices in job performance
  • Regular and reliable attendance
  • Maintains a professional standard at Juniper Preserve including, but not limited to, appearance, interaction with members, associates, guests of the resort, verbal discussions and written correspondence (does not discuss work related issues with members and resort guests)
  • Maintains positive attitude and the flexibility to take on new and different tasks as assigned by the Golf Course Superintendent(s), Assistant Superintendent(s) and Director of Agronomy
Qualifications

Required

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
  • Associate or Bachelor Degree in Turfgrass Science/Agronomy/Horticulture/Plant/Soil Sciences or equivalent knowledge
  • Must have experience in all phases of golf course management and turf culture - this includes a working knowledge of planting and culture of turf grasses and ornamentals, proper use of fertilizers and soil conditions, pest diagnosis and control methods, drainage systems, watering practices and irrigation systems
  • Licensed pesticide applicator with an understanding of environmental laws
  • Working knowledge of the game of golf
  • Ability to schedule and supervise work to achieve the most efficient use of employees and equipment
  • Ability to read and speak English (preferably also Spanish)
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees, managers, members and the general public
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
