When people think of the hospitality industry it usually revolves around hotels and hotels only. But, the hospitality industry is so much more than that! From being an engineer to being a banquet chef, many positions are available in all hospitality segments. There are 4 different segments of hospitality someone can work in or manage.
Food and Beverage
Food and beverage is the largest segment of hospitality. It includes any food and beverage establishment large or small. This means 5-star restaurants, catering companies, delis, cafeterias and so much more! In the food and beverage industry, roles are often under the 4 main responsibilities of preparing, packaging, delivering, and serving food and beverages.
Common food and beverage careers include being a bartender, server, chef, or restaurant manager. Did you know that there are also different varieties of servers or chefs? Such as banquet servers, room service servers, and chefs like sous chefs and executive chefs.
In food and beverage, there is no shortage of the “type” of food and beverage worker you can be whether it’s fast food, a bar with no food at all, or fine dining.
Lodging and Accommodation
Businesses that provide people with a place to stay for one or more nights are a part of the lodging and accommodation segment. Hotels, motels, inns, bed and breakfasts, resorts, and more are all a part of this hospitality segment. There are so many unique places to lodge as well, such as campsites, sustainability hotels, and more.
There is a multitude of different positions available within lodging organizations. Hotels often have restaurants included which means food and beverage positions are also open. The building needs to be maintained by engineers, housekeepers, front desk agents, event planners, and much more. The lodging segment serves a multitude of people from business professionals to military personnel to backpackers so working in this segment can provide an exciting experience.
Travel and Tourism
The travel and tourism segment has everything to do with getting people from one place to another. This can mean being a part of a company that books buses, trains, and airplanes, but also includes travel agents and tour operators to help tourists navigate a new city, country, or area. Flight attendants, pilots, and other airport workers make travel for tourists a bit more stress-free. Obviously, all the other segments of hospitality rely on this segment to get people to their location and recommend their businesses.
Entertainment and Recreation
Entertainment businesses provide some form of entertainment, from a movie theater to a sporting event arena, to a zoo or museum. There can be many types of roles in these establishments, from a front desk position to a tour guide, or concession worker.
Recreation businesses are where someone goes to refresh their mind and/or body through relaxation or enjoyment. Spas, fitness centers, and theme parks. The roles you can find in these establishments range from laundry attendants to supervisors, servers, baristas, and more!
All of these segments give hospitality professionals an opportunity to have an adventurous and fulfilling career, with plenty of opportunities to try something new and find your perfect fit!
