Often painted by the media as tech-savvy yet entitled, there’s no denying that this generation has become a substantial—and essential—part of today’s workforce. In fact, they may even be the best hires for your hotel, whether you’re currently recruiting front desk associates, line cooks, room attendants, bartenders or general managers.

Hiring millennials for leadership positions can improve the acceptance and diversity of your hotel’s workplace culture. Research conducted by Ernst & Young LLP found that Generation Y managers were the best at building “culturally competent teams” as well as not discriminating “based on race, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical abilities, etc.” They also outpaced Generation X and Baby Boomer managers in the ability to be “inclusive leaders” and “involve a diverse set of people in providing opportunities, developing strategies and making decisions.”
As mentioned earlier, millennials are also very tech-savvy, and their expertise in this area includes social media. They’ve grown up with Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and are adept at sharing information in the form of posts, tweets and snapshots. Seventy-one percent of them engage with social media on a daily basis. Hire from Generation Y and use their skills to your hotel’s advantage, putting their natural social media proclivity to work to enhance communication with your visitors, build your brand and reputation, and recruit other like-minded young professionals.
Millennials also want to be challenged, and that’s something most hospitality jobs can provide. They thrive in dynamic, rapidly-evolving environments where few days are the same and tasks, responsibilities and priorities are continuously shifting. When you hire workers from Generation Y, you build a team that can easily handle the stress of multi-tasking, naturally thinks outside the box when solving problems, and eagerly adopts new processes and procedures.
Millennials value the opportunity to grow professionally as well. Though their generation has a reputation for job hopping (some studies have shown they change jobs twice as often as Generation X and three times as often as Baby Boomers do), they can also be extremely loyal—if you give them what they need. That includes plenty of opportunities to learn and a culture that encourages and supports professional development. In fact, in one survey, 65 percent cited that development as the most important factor in a job.
Young people from Generation Y also have strong values. According to Deloitte’s 2016 Millennial Survey, they retain these strong values throughout all stages of their careers. Fifty-six percent have “ruled out ever working for a particular organization because of its values or standard of conduct.” They often base their decisions at work on “personal values/morals” before “personal goals and ambitions and career progression.” What does this mean for your hotel? Hire millennials and you can count on employees who are ethical, honest and unlikely to cut corners.
